Wearing a Midi Skirt // MostlyMilly

Last year I basically wore winter clothes all year. Even in August I wore jumpers and would almost sweat to death just because I felt comfortable in them. I'm too comfortable wearing my black jumpers, black jeans and boots because I know it's very hard to get wrong. This year I've decided to branch out and try and wear things I would have avoided in the past due to lack of confidence. No way am I ditching my black but I really am going to try to wear something different.

This is my first ever Midi skirt and at first I was extremely skeptical. I was thinking 'oh my god I look like nun' but after throwing together this outfit I really started to like it. My shirt is from DKNY and I love the collar, it goes with everything and it must be one of my most worn items in my wardrobe. The skirt is from New Look and it's just the right shape and length however I'm not sure whether I'll be brave enough to wear it without heels as it could look unflattering. My shoes are from Asos and I love them. They're very high but I'm really into stilettos and think they're a must for anyone's wardrobe, they make any outfit easy to dress up.
I'm aware that this outfit may not be everyone's style but I'm really looking forward to the sun coming out so I can wear it.

Film VS Book ( Travelling to Infinity and The Theory Of Everything )

A couple of weeks ago I was having a browse in WHSmiths and spotted a picture of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones on the cover of one of the books. I recognized it from the newly released film ' The Theory Of Everything' and found it was actually the true story behind the film, written by Jane Hawking herself. I decided ( as I tend to do ) to buy and read the book before going to see the film at the cinema. I have finally finished the book and have just returned from seeing the film.
Naturally, I've heard of Stephen Hawking, everyone has, however I had no idea he had been married for over 25 years. The quote I find best describes Jane and Stephen Hawkings situation is " Behind every great man there is a great woman." Now, I'm not saying this is true in every case but it definitely is here. Jane Hawking cared for Stephen for years as his totally disabling Motor Neurone disease wasted him away. Jane first wrote the autobiography back in 1999 however in 2008 it was re published, highly adapted and updated. I found the book to be unlike other autobiographies I've read. Jane is very respectful of her ex husband whilst retaining a total feeling of honesty and candidness which I found extremely honorable and decent. Her strength of character throughout her years with Stephen really made me question my own strength and I developed a huge sense of admiration for her. Some of the experiences she shared in the book made my jaw literally drop. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and recommend it entirely.

After enjoying the book so much, you can imagine I had pretty high expectations for the film. I was not disappointed however I still prefer the book. I wanted the film to show more of what Jane had to go through and although it did shed a lot of light on her struggle, I still felt as though Stephen's story was brought more to the forefront of the film. Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of Stephen is literally incredible. Occasionally the line between reality and film become blurred and you forget Eddie isn't in fact Stephen. In parts, they look so alike and you can tell Eddie really studied Stephen's mannerisms to create the convincing part he achieved.

( below: left, Stephen and Jane  right: Eddie and Felicity )

I love Felicity Jones as an actress however I'm not sure she was as perfect for the role of Jane as Eddie was for Stephen. I'm not sure why I feel this way however maybe it's due to having such a clear cut idea of how Jane should be from reading the book. Still, I really did love the film and I will not be surprised if Redmayne recieves an Oscar for his role.

Thank you for reading :)

Audrey Book Collection // MostlyMilly

I seem to have subconsciously acquired a collection of Audrey Hepburn books. I suppose it's because every time I see a new one I simply can't walk away from it and they're the perfect gift for an Audrey fan like myself so they are a regular at my birthday and at Christmas.
Here are the Audrey books I have in my possession and also a list of other Audrey books I've read due to borrowing them from the library.

1. Just Being Audrey - Margaret Cardillo and Julia Denos
This book is aimed more towards younger children but I really wanted it because of the wonderful illustrations inside. It simply tells the story of Audrey's life and would be the perfect gift for a little girl. Definitely buying this for one of my cousin's birthdays, it's very sweet and is a great introduction to Audrey.

2. To Audrey with love - Hubert de Givenchy
One of the most recent additions to my collection. This book is quite pricey but it really is beautiful. It's an ode to Audrey by one of her closest friends Givenchy and includes stunning sketches of clothes he designed for her through the years, including some from her most famous films.

3. Audrey Hepburn and the making of Breakfast at Tiffany's - Sam Wasson
If you're a fan of Breakfast at Tiffany's this book is definitely for you.  It includes a lot of information about the making of the film and how it evolved from Capote's 1958 novella to the classic film Audrey is so known for today.

4. What Would Audrey Do? - Pamela Keogh
I adore this book. If you want tips on how to act like Audrey you should invest in this book. It has plenty of tips, tricks and ideas on how to imitate Audrey's effortless style, grace and kindness.

5.  How to be lovely - Melissa Hellstern
Another pretty little book full of ways you can incorporate Audrey into your own personality and life.

6. Audrey The 60s - David Willis
‘This gorgeous book contains more than 200 photographs, some iconic, some rare and some previously unseen...Recollections and tributes from designers, photographers, friends and co-stars as well as reminiscences from Hepburn herself make for a book which should delight every devotee.
(Daily Mail)

One of my favourites. I found this a few months ago and I scraped out the bottom of my purse to buy it. It's constantly sat on my coffee table in my room and I love to flick through the pictures. It's the perfect coffee table book and a lovely gift for an Audrey fan.

7. The Audrey Hepburn treasures - foreward by Sean Hepburn Ferrer
This is a very special Audrey book. It originally belonged to my Grandma and before I really knew who Audrey was, I used to flick through it at her house, not really fully understanding the importance of the lady in the photographs or having any knowledge of how much she would influence my life in the coming years. It still really belongs to my Grandma but I look after it in my collection and it makes me happy to flick through the pictures and the treasures inside. Inside the book you will find not only a moving foreward written by her son Sean but precious copies of things like letters she wrote, a programme from her days in Gigi and many unseen photographs. This to me, is the ultimate Audrey book.

8.  Audrey Hepburn photographs 1953-1966 - Bob Willoughby
My dad gave this to me for Christmas and I love it. It includes so many wonderful pictures I've not even come across before and is a lovely addition to my coffee table, sitting lovingly next to my 'Audrey the 60's' book.

Other books I've read from the library :

- Enchantment: The Life of Audrey Hepburn : Donald Spoto
A lovely biography on Audrey's life and career. I've read many biographies on various celebrities and I feel Donald treats Audrey with respect and paints her as the wonderful, classy woman she was. A good read for someone who knows little about Audrey, very informative and interesting.

- Audrey Hepburn,  An Elegant spirit : Sean Hepburn
An extremely touching book by her son Sean that sheds light on Audrey's personal life and how she affected so many people in wonderful ways. Includes lots of personal, unseen pictures. I would recommend purchasing this book as the funds go to UNICEF. ( I only just found this out )

- Audrey Style: Pamela Keogh, introduction by Hubert de Givenchy
Loved this book. Fantastic for anyone interested in Audreys clothes over the years. A good place to gather inspiration for your own wardrobe.

There are plenty of Audrey Hepburn books out there and my collection is no where near finished. If you have any of these books I've mentioned or even a recommendation for one that I haven't mentioned please feel free to comment down below! Would love to know of any others to add to my collection :)

lots of love and thank you for reading x

Putting On The Glitz Lip Glaze Set // MostlyMilly

For Christmas I recieved this Putting on the glitz lip glaze set by Stila from my Dad and was pleasantly surprised. I had been eyeing up Stila lip glosses for a while before hand and was really excited to try them out. I’m not a huge lip gloss girl but these are very pretty and the nude shades are perfect for me. The set comes with 8 sparkly lip glosses, ranging from very pale and subtle to dark pigmented berry colours.

My favourite colours are Glow, Glint and Glimmer as they extremely easy to wear, pretty and go well with my most used lipsticks.

The texture of the glosses are very sticky however they smell and taste pleasant ( not that I recommend eating them.)

From right to left the colours are:
Glamour ( sparkling Ruby) , Glory ( blackberry) , Glisten ( sparkling sugarplum ), Glitter ( sparkling pink diamond) ,Gleam ( sparkling mauve), Glow ( sparkly champagne ), Glint ( icy pink), Glimmer (sparkling apricot).

I don’t feel I’ve had enough time to use them yet to tell you how long I think they last. Like I said, the texture is sticky and I presume they last well against food and drink and various other daily obstacles however speaking from experience , you are likely to find yourself with a mouthful of hair especially in the wind, but that is to be expected with all lip glosses, especially of this texture.

Thank you for reading :)

Recent Reads // MostlyMilly

Happy 2015!
Hope you're all having a positive, happy start to your year.
Recently I have been reading a lot, especially due to the books I received as Christmas presents.
Here are a few books I have read recently and that I recommend.

1. In Cold Blood - Truman Capote
I cannot believe I have only just read this. I knew Capote was good, naturally I'd read Breakfast at Tiffany's and then ' Truman Capote The Complete stories' which was lent to me and I loved them. I became intrigued after hearing so many great things about In Cold Blood, his final finished book and I needed to read it. I was shopping with my Grandma before Christmas and we went into the book shop in town and she asked if there was anything that I would like. When I spotted In Cold Blood I knew this was what I wanted and she kindly bought it for me, wrapped it up and I received it on Christmas morning.
The faster I read a book, the better the book is, and I read this book like lightening. I didn't put it down and couldn't put it down. Truman Capote was a genius and only he could tell the true story of two cold blooded murderers and make you feel sorry for them, make them so human even after they had committed such an inhumane act. A thrilling, brilliantly written book.
Straight after I finished In Cold Blood I watched the film Capote starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays Truman. I believe he won an Oscar for the film and it was well deserved. The film was fantastic and portrayed the writing of In Cold Blood and the lengths Capote went to create such a brilliant book. Highly recommend.

2. Revolution - Russell Brand
I have become very interested in Russell Brand recently. I don't agree with everything he has to say but I think it's a very important thing to be able to listen to other peoples views and opinions. He has some very interesting points included in this book and I did enjoy it, however it got quite heavy towards the end and I had had enough. Would recommend to anyone interested in politics and/or Russell Brand.

3. Travelling to Infinity - Jane Hawking
I haven't finished this book yet, I am still currently reading it however I wanted to include it in this post as I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far. I haven't yet seen the film 'The theory of everything' but I would really like to. I thought I would read the book it was based on first as that is what I usually tend to do, read the book then watch the film. That way, I can use my imagination and enjoy the book without being influenced by the film before hand.

Thank you very much for reading! x
